As detailed by Darshan Shah on LinkedIn in the article “Fluoroelastomer (FKM-Viton),” fluoroelastomers are categorized based on factors such as monomer composition, cure mechanism, and curative level. These classifications help define the mechanical and physical properties, fluid and heat resistance, and processing characteristics of Viton® fluoroelastomers.

Focusing on selecting the appropriate type of Viton® fluoroelastomer for specific applications by examining inherent physical property differences among the Viton® families. For example, resistance to compression set is crucial for seals, making the A-types of Viton® an ideal choice. On the other hand, F-type Viton® fluoroelastomers are preferred when extensive fluid resistance is needed. For applications requiring both fluid resistance and low temperature flexibility, GFLT-types of Viton® offer the best overall performance.

Viton® fluoroelastomers stand out due to their exceptional balance of physical properties. They exhibit remarkable resistance to temperature extremes, maintaining their mechanical properties even at high temperatures. For instance, Viton® compounds remain elastic when exposed to temperatures up to 204°C (400°F) continuously, with intermittent exposures reaching up to 260°C (500°F). Viton® also performs well in cold conditions, suitable for dynamic applications down to -18°C (-0°F) and static applications down to -54°C (-65°F).

The resistance to a wide variety of fluids and chemicals is another highlight of Viton® fluoroelastomers. They offer superior fluid resistance compared to non-fluorinated elastomers, making them excellent for use with oils, fuels, lubricants, and most mineral acids. Their low permeability to many substances and good performance with oxygenated automotive fuels further enhances their applicability.

Viton® products also show impressive resistance to compression set, atmospheric oxidation, sun, weather, and fungal growth. These properties, combined with good electrical performance in low voltage and low frequency applications, and inherent resistance to burning, make Viton® fluoroelastomers a reliable choice for numerous industrial applications.
