As reported by Advanced Science News in their article “Fluoroelastomers,” fluoroelastomers are crucial in various high-performance applications such as fuel cell membranes, lithium-ion battery components, and harsh-condition seals due to their exceptional chemical resistance, even at elevated temperatures. The traditional curing methods for fluoroelastomers often involve using toxic crosslinkers like bisamines and peroxides, which can compromise their performance.
Bruno Améduri and his team at the Institute Charles Gerhardt in Montpellier, France, in collaboration with DuPont Performance Elastomers, have developed an innovative and simple approach to crosslink fluoroelastomers using the azide-nitrile cycloaddition ‘click’ reaction. This novel method, first adapted by the group in 2010 with the azide-alkyne approach, aims to overcome issues with side products and improve the thermal stability of the materials.
The new crosslinking technique involves the use of a fluorinated bis-azido curative to link the polymeric chains in DuPont Kalrez, resulting in a perfluoroelastomer that demonstrates superior thermal stability and tunable physical and chemical properties. This advancement in click crosslinking allows for greater flexibility in material design and performance, which is critical for various demanding applications.
