Fluorocarbon is a unique product made from a mixture of carbon and fluorine, and can be used in a range of applications including aircrafts and auto engines.

Seals and O-rings need to be able to withstand harsh conditions, so the durability, versatility, and strength of fluorocarbon rubber make it the perfect material for these components. Not all of these solutions are the same and the quality can vary between brands. For example, Viton fluorocarbon is a leading material and has the following properties.

The Ability to Withstand Extreme Temperatures
Fluorocarbon stands out in the aviation industry due to its high resistance to extreme temperatures. This is an essential feature for the aircrafts and engines that use it as it has a direct impact on safety and performance.

A standard compound can withstand temperatures between -13°F and +446°F. This can be upgraded to a special compound that has temperature level tolerance between -40°F and +446°F. Fluorocarbon rubber is unaffected by steam and the hardness range is 55 to 90.

A High Resistance to Chemicals
While fluoroelastomers are not suitable for use in aircraft and engines due to the chemical similarity to solvents, modifying them changes everything. When the chemical makeup is altered and fluorine replaces the hydrogen, you are left with a transformed solution.

Fluorocarbon rubber is suitable for use in aircraft because it is highly resistant to chemicals and pressure. This means that high octane swell won’t deteriorate the material, and O-rings and seals can be used with a number of fluids to prevent leakage.

There are a few exceptions where in some circumstances, fluorocarbon might not be the best choice. Chemicals to avoid include ketones, amines, nitro hydrocarbons, and hot hydrofluoric or chlorosulfonic acids.
